I have recently been looking to get myself a toy as such to go sliding in and to get me about. Trouble is i don't no where to start.
First and foremost i don't want a s14 because ive heard to many horror stories and atm im not looking to spend a lot at all ..£1000 max. The cars ive been looking at are

Bmw 328i se
Bmw 325
Mazda mx5

But im really stuck on what else there is out there in my budget ? . i would love the 328i se but insurance is a little too dear for my liking , especially as im more then likely going to prang it during my quest to become DK lol

I can insure the 318 for a reasonable amount but there a bit harder to get sideways , is there any tips on making them faster ? the same goes with the mx5 are there any ways of making them go sideways well ? on youtube they seem to perform well but i dont no the specs of the cars.

Thanks

Weld the diff, lower it, go out in the rain, any RWD will skid then

mx5 is to hard to drift as standard there's nowhere near enough power so its a 325 or 328 :)

E30 325. The lower spec models have a weaker drivetrain apparently.

I have done a fair few dori days in 325s and MX5s.

The MX5 is just an awesome car full stop. Get it stiff and you will need a bucket seat and a smaller steering wheel in it if you are over 5ft9. They are a little harder to drift especially at higher speeds but i enjoy this now as it is more of a challenge. Nice and twitchy as they are so light and short wheel based really keeps you on your toes. IMHO though these should be used for gripping as they really do handle well and are really not ideal drift cars. I have one at the mo with bilsteins and a LSD and battering it round b roads powersliding it out of corners feels much more rewarding than actually drifting it.

The E36 BMW 325 is toooo damn perfect for drifting. I love how stable it is and you can skid at silly speeds feeling completley in control at all times as obviously it has a much longer wheel base. Power is all good and if you put 45+ PSI in the rear tyres you will be skidding happy :). Cheap parts and they just dont seem to break that easily. I have stacked mine into almco, tyre barriers and it just takes it all!!! Dont bother with an LSD in the zimmer just weld it up and fecking kick its head in. A good seat is esential as sliding round on a leather arm chair sucks. I remember taking my mate out when i first got it and having to hold on to the a pillar with the window open to stop me flying around haha.

If you are anything like me your progression will be pretty quick. You will think it is piss easy and cant understand why everyone claims it is hard. THEN you will get a huge tank slapper and your balls will shrink and you will suddenly realise there is a bit more to it haha. Then you can start progressing properly.

If you were going to look at BMW's. 318's can drift but need rain and a welded diff. Not much fun in the dry and little mods to up the power are not enough. Downing Atlanta did make a supercharge kit for the M44 318 block which worked a treat but trying to find one is a ballache. Ideally if you didnt want to go down the charge route, then block work would be needed.

As mentioned, a E30 325 would be a better bet. Lighter than the e36 onwards and overall better feel especially when taking it into bends. Not sure how it would be on insurance though. They are going up in price so tricky to say.

I had a e36 318is which was hellafun in the rain but trying to do the same antics during the dry use ended up breaking something more than anything else. :(

For £1k though....you are going to be able to find a really basic 318 for that but don't expect much from it. I would estimate the first things that you would need to consider is a change to the water pump, thermostat and radiator+bottle since they are prone to expanding.

Parts are a pain to find if it needs work and the price of those are rising. A lot of old ratty motors are going up in price especially if the body is in good nick.

I mate just bought a 340(?) saloon and having a miserable time with it when trying to source parts.

well ideally id only want to spend £1k but if something came up which i realy liked at a higher price id probably consider it , but i dont want to splash loads of money out as i have another family car and im trying to save money now , the purchase of this car is only going to come from the funds of my motorbike sale ,

the mx5 is swaying me more tbh , but ive had a 328 before and i loved the way it went into the corners

s13 - for 1k will have its poblems

325/328 - good cars with welded diff

mx5 - quite small inside, under powered, but skidable with welded diff (diff is more difficult to weld then say an s13 / s14)

s14 - dont know what harror stories you have heard - iv owned 4 and loved them all ( so nice to skid aswell) over 1k though

volvo 340 / 360 owned 2 - horrible as a daily ( boring to skid)

other options -
Older supra
mazda 323
chevette
sierra
rx7 FC (more than 1k usually)

there are so many!

aslong as its rwd and you put the effort in, itll slide

but obviously unpowered cars just wont have the balls

welded diff , cut springs, and youre good to go

I used to have an e36 318 with the 2.5 lump in it,was a perfect car to drift in 192bhp with a welded diff.pulled 3rd in the dry no problem
Was juicy though 14-16mpg around town with the 318 short ratio diff in it

find a an E30 320 get a 325 rear diff, fit and enjoy. They are very easy to get sideways and they maintain it well. Have a look on E30zone and their is also a rat drifters site, but I can't remember the name exactly.
