I recnetly got rid of my 172 for my civic! 172's are awsome mate! Kind of regret selling it sometimes! Every one knocks them for being french however i literally had no problems with mine! They handle an absolute treat! especially with coilovers! Recently they have gone down in price aswell! you can pick one up for like 2k!
Just make sure the cambelt has been changed, if you don't know how to do it yourself they can be rather pricey to have done at a garage! I would have one of these over a 106 gti any day!

Heres my old one...

Speed and what you consider fast is down to personal preference. 7-8 Seconds isn't really Fast but can still be lots of fun if the car is light and nimble.

Weight come into it alot, it's been proven in all the Hot Version videos where Keiichi Tsuchiya beats some very powerful cars on the touge in his 170hp AE86.

I'd go for the Clio, I wouldn't even want to be seen in a 106gti. The Clio 172's going to be fun but like Lance said it's still a stepping stone.

ive had the clio 172 (non cup) and saxo vts and 106 gti... the clio was by far the best car out of all of them. had the trip computer, 6 cd changer.. much more comfortable drive aswell as being the better looker. one thing u gotta look out for when buying a clio 172 is if the timing bebelt has been changed. if not its a big job. also with the pug... the rear axle is a big job. the pug is slower than the clio, but imo is "nippier" around lanes. also u will get between 34-37mpg out of the clio if driven half tidy... which is great for a car which if its the cup and you cam and map it. could see 195-200bhp....

Renaultsport Clios are quite awesome TBH. Yes they're, not 'quick' but they're amazing to drive.

Meh

I've got a lot of hate for French cars, but both 106 GTi's and Clio 172's are reasonably nippy in standard form and decent handling.

I had a mate with a 106 GTi, it was fast enough for what it was. But I hate them, the pedals are shit, the gearboxes are terrible, they're just horrible horrible cars.

Now a lot of Honda lovers will tell you that a B16 powered Civic will eat GTi's all day, well they aren't that slow from what I've seen (they're very light).

Personally I'd have a B series Honda over a shitty French car though.

Check 182's on insurance, before I got my civic, i looked at them and they were a lot cheaper than 172's on insurance... god knows why

If the 182 is cheaper, I think id get that, i dont like the look of 172s

ive only ever been in a 106 GTI, completely standard, the damn thing handles so well for what it is, nippy little motor, only thing i found that they are mega cramped inside.

The Clio 172 and 106 GTi are about the same in a straightline south of about 80mph, the 172 is a bit quicker above that

Id probably go with the 106 if it is cheaper, you'd get better MPG as well if the car is only going to be used as a daily by the misses

Standard 106gti kinda nippy, cammed 106 gti is fast. Suprises cars well over 250bhp.

Power to weight bitches.

Camming them only adds about 20bhp, there used to be a few local to home. I would say they manage 0-60 in the higher 6s based on what I saw them doing. As far as surprising cars in excess of 250bhp, a vague statement that I would still answer with very few

My friend has had a lot of 172's (non cup) and I must admit they are great little cars. They pull and handle well and a 2.0 engine in that little shell is a good formula. I couldn't own one but that's just me.

He recently bought a 182 and its nowhere as good as the 172. The gearing seemed longer and just didn't feel right. He had a little drag race with another mate of mine who owns the 172 and the 182 got beaten. I've enever owened or sat in a 106 so couldn't comment on it.

Best mate has a 172 and it's an awesome little car.
Nippy, comfy, decent interior in standard guise, not bad fuel consumption either.

106's don't feel like anything special, plus if you have big feet you're fucked with those shite pedals :P

I am not saying this out of die hard loyalty to honda, but a renault or a pug or a citreon are all french pieces of crap in my opinion.

LOL this thread be funny.

As has been said countless times; anything below 250bhp (I'd go as far to say more) isn't fast in terms of acceleration. I drive my EG with 100% commitment whenever I use it which makes it seem fast, but in reality it's only 184bhp which means I can drive it like a champ without speed creeping up on me.

I've been in 420 brake civics, 400/400 evo's, high powered pulsars and silvia's, all cars that can be considered fast. On one hand, spanking nobles and gsxr1000's in a civic is hilarious, but I know I couldn't drive them in the same manner as I do which makes me justify owning warm honda's.

On that basis I'd buy a s2 rallye, they'll do everything a gti/172 does but look so much better and are free from the chavvy image.
